The Massanutten Youth Brass Band's 6th season started with great enthusiasm and wonderful music making, as band members came together once again for another year of banding. New and returning members enjoyed two days of rehearsals as they began preparations for Christmas in Brass!, the band's annual benefit concert for the Harrisonburg Salvation Army. The MYBB will be joined once again by the Massanutten Brass Band for this special holiday event. Christmas in Brass! with the Massanutten Brass Band Sunday, December 13 3 pm Memorial Hall, James Madison University The final concert of the season has the youth band once again teaming up with the Massanutten Brass Band for Springtime in Brass. Part of the Concerts on the Lawn series sponsored by the JMU College of Visual and Performing Arts, the program will feature a variety of music including two stirring contest marches, original concert works and music from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The concert will also boast a father/son first, as the MYBB featured soloist will be MBB music director Kevin Stees performing Song for the Skies by Paul Lovatt-Cooper followed by MBB principal euphonium Ryan Stees performing the traditional Welsh folksong Ar Lan y Môr (Beside the Sea) with the MBB. The concert will conclude with massed bands performing Peter Graham's version of Swedish Folk Song (How Great Thou Art). Sunday, May 18 7:00 p.m. JMU, School of Music Patio (Duke Hall Lawn) Rain Location: Harrisonburg High School The band celebrates spring as they present a concert in conjunction with the James Madison University Brass Band. The program will feature Northern Landscapes by Peter Graham, Variations on 'Laudate Dominum' by Edward Gregson and Horizons by Paul Lovatt-Cooper. The band will join forces with the JMU Brass Band in a performance of Reunion and Finale from the film Gettysburg. Sunday, April 6 4:00 p.m. Harrisonburg High School Admission: Donation, $5 per person recommended The MYBB is excited to once again share the stage with the award winning Massanutten Brass Band for Christmas in Brass! Proceeds from the event will go the Harrisonburg Salvation Army. The youth band will be performing a variety of selections celebrating the holiday season. The concert finale will feature the combined bands performing Leroy Anderson's A Christmas Festival. Christmas in Brass! Join the Shenandoah Valley's very own youth brass band in an exciting concert of music for brass and percussion. The band, lead by musical director Rhonda Stees, is looking forward to sharing the stage with guests, the internationally recognized JMU Brass Band. Now in their 4th year, the Massanutten Youth Brass Band draws students from 6 area schools. Sparke (Combined Bands) The band's joint Christmas concert with the Massanutten Brass Band was a huge success. The combined effort raised over $2000 for the Harrisonburg Salvation Army. Both bands performed to an audience of well over 450 and received a standing ovation at the conclusion of the concert after performing Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival" with massed bands. After a break for the holidays, the band will begin preparing for a concert to be shared with the internationally recognized James Madison University Brass Band. Only one more rehearsal until the band's first performance of the season - Christmas in Brass! This annual benefit concert for the the Salvation Army will also feature the Massanutten Brass Band directed by Kevin Stees. Youth band director, Rhonda Stees, is pulling out all the stops for an exciting and entertaining evening of holiday favorites. After each band performs, the evening will conclude with combined bands performing the ever popular "A Christmas Festival" by Leroy Anderson. |
